Now hear this!
Sea Scout Ship 90, the S.S.S. North Star, of New Milford PA held it's
54th Bridge of Honor on Saturday, 28 August 1999. Among the "usual"
awards and presentation of: charter renewal, quality unit award,
national standard ship award, new member admissions, service stars,
Merit Badges, Boy Scout and Sea Scout rank advancements, and long
cruises, was a very unusual event ... a Change of Command for the North
After 34 years as advisor and skipper, Ron Hall becomes Skipper Emeritus
and joins the short list of predecessors: first skipper Roger Shepherd
(1943) who is still serving on Ship 90's committee; and past advisor
Julius Bahmann (1950) who led the Ship through a changes to an Explorer
Scout Patrol in Troop 90, Outdoor Explorer Post 90, Air Explorer
Squadron 90, and back to an Outdoor Post. Ron Hall became Advisor of
the Post in 1965 at the age of 22, converted it back to a Sea Explorer
Ship in 1969, and has served as Skipper ever since ... until now. Ron
is not abandoning ship however; he will continue as a committee member
with responsibility for keeping our log books up to date and publishing
our quarterly Parrot news letter, and managing our ongoing Flag sales.
Taking command is Barry Hall, who earned his quartermaster award under
Ron in 1983, served in the USCG until 1989, returned to New Milford and
became Ship 90's first mate in 1989, where he has since earned his Sea
Scouter's Training Award, Sea Badge Trident, the District Award of
Merit, and the Good Shepherd Award.
Relieving Barry as 1st mate is his wife Jan Hall, who has served as 3rd
mate and 2nd mate for several years, and who also has earned her Sea
Scouter's Training Award and Sea Badge Trident.
In answer to a question from one of our younger Sea Scouts, yes we will
continue to use Ron's pool for our swimming and lifesaving practice and
the island in front of his castle for our outdoor land ship ceremonies.
(I hope to have pictures to post in a week or so.)
That is all.
