This is kind of interesting responding to Seascout-Net on this subject
(since most everyone here could answer the question). I'm assuming that
you've had a look at the Sea Scouts, BSA web site
<http://www.seascout.org>. I'd particularly direct your attention to the
'Welcome' message at <http://www.seascout.org/welcome>, which gives a good
overview of what Sea Scouting is and how to get involved.
The minimum age is 14, so your son is nearly old enough. You can find
where the local Sea Scout units are by either consulting our Ships listing
<http://www.seascout.org/ships>, or by consulting BSA's council locator
<http://www.bsa.scouting.org/venturing/council.html> to find out the
contact information for your local Scout council. When you call up the
council, tell them where you live and that you are interested in knowing
where the closest 'Sea Scout Ships' are. If you don't get a clear
response, ask to talk with the executive responsible for Venturing. He/she
should be able to put you in touch with your local Sea Scout Skippers.
If there is more than one Ship in your area, make a point of checking out
more than one Ship (that's what Sea Scout units are called). There is
quite a bit of difference, one Ship to the next. For example, while my
Ship is a sailing unit, the next one to the South of us is exclusively a
powerboat unit. I think we're both really good, but the difference in
boats makes a big difference in the type of program we pursue.
Beyond that, put your questions to this list. You'll get a lot of good
