Greetings shipmates !
Having just returned from teaching basic sailing at the Palmico Sea Base
in North Carolina( East Carolina Council) , I want to let all Sea Scouts,
Skippers, and support crews know that a jewel has been unearthed, on the
historic shores of the Palmico River, just south of the port of
Washington,NC, and lying ajacent to Blounts Creek. Blackbeard himself, ( I am
directly related to the old cut throat ), sailed on these waters, and his
house, can be seen in Bath, NC just a few miles down stream.
The Sea Base offers High Adventure cruises on 3 sailboats, skippered by
professional scouters and Captains. All the crews earn the 50 miler for
traveling on the water 64 miles, and completing the requirements as needed.
Additionally, the Small Boat Sailing merit badge is earned, as well as the
Small Boat Handlers award from our own Sea Scouting program. Astronomy and
other badges can be earned depending on the weather. This week past, my own
in-house Apprentice sailed as crew before the mast, enjoying the stops at
Washington, Goose Creek State Park, and Bath . The crews ate pretty high off
the hog also. Enduring rain, heat, insects, and high seas on the return
trip, the High Adventure crews took out the Base's little Sunfish for another
short cruise along the sound. Which is leading to a Sun Fish cruise along the
Palmico sound later during the summer for any interested.
