Jim and others:
When I wrote my response to Robert's posting, I knew that I would draw a
considerable amount of amount of fire from obvious sources. In fact I predicted
a few of the sources in advance.
I have never, nor will I ever squelch anyone's right to present their point of
view. In fact if you remember about a year ago, I was just about alone in my
support of a youth member who was quite literally being berated for their views
in this same forum (to the point that that person no longer posts comments here,
but that person and I converse on Sea Scout issues on a regular and frequent
I wholeheartedly adhere to the principal of "youth run", to the point of pain
sometimes! That is the way I learned and I believe that it is a tried and true
method. At the same time, I do not "rubber stamp" views-even from my own
Boatswain. I often will support his decisions in public and will discuss them in
private. Personally I could step in and get some things done by taking personal
direction of an issue in our Ship. But what am I solving? I will have only
given them the answer/solution but have not helped them discover how to find the
I am involved in youth issues for the city of Simi Valley that permits me to be
in the three high schools on a regular basis. I am also personal friends with
two of the three High School Principals as well as about 6 other teachers or
administrators and the top level of City Management and Government. . . this is a
common discussion with us. . . we have given our children all of the answers but
have not taught them how to find them! But I digress. ..
Personally, I feel the program would be better off if the youth did not have to
deal with so many of us! But we are a necessary evil.
I don't believe that I ever suggested that he join the military. . . I made the
assumption (perhaps incorrectly) that he is military bound by some of his
As for referring a person seeking military preparation to the local Sea Cadet
unit, that is what I would do in our particular situation as we are not a very
militaristic unit and there are none local to us. I do not believe in lying to
prospects who express a particular desire, truth does not hurt in the long run.
The prospect gets what they are seeking and we do not get a person who is not
satisfied with our program.
Jim, you know me pretty well and I think you understand my perspective. In
reality the program faces several issues that are much more important than
uniforming, but this is the current discussion here.
Simply stated, I personally believe that a person should take more pride in the
achievement than in the display of that achievement. My wall has but three of my
many achievements (and a stereo speaker has migrated in front of one of them)
after some 21 years as both a youth and adult member. I wear but my
Quartermaster, Skippers Key, Sea Badge and one youth level award. . . and have
not even updated my long cruise arcs in some 8 or so years! The remainder are
buried somewhere in a box for me to find years from now to reflect upon.
Anyway, lets see if I can't erase this target from my backside!!
