Dear Sea Scouters,
I guess it's time for some youth chat on ribbons. My opinion stands that
ribbons should not be an offical part of the uniform. These medals and
etc. should not be worn on the Class 1's, unless the ocassion calls for it,
like a Bridge of Honor or something. Just wear the reef knots, there not
that hard to sew on, and they don't get as dirty, and require little care.
If a person gets an award that is reef knotless, don't worry about it.
Wear the medal(s) to a special occasion, not a monthly uniform inspection.
I have always seen a scout as dependable by their charachter, not by their
chest full of medals. Just don't worry about the noticibilty. I know that
different regions, or even ships have some alterations to the uniform, but
don't try to make every one a standard. I do not think it is possible for
every sea scout uniform to look the same in the U.S., but it would be nice.
If a scout wants to wear a ribbon, even if it's redundant, their going to
want to wear it for show. I believe it is up to the Skipper's best
judgement to allow the wearing of these ribbons, they should know what's
