Fellow Sea Scouters:
I think we all have good reason to be concerned about how the federal
government does or does not support Scouting. I am frequently reminded of this
in my 9 to 5 (actually 6:45 to 4:15) job where, as one of my colleagues at the
University of Florida was fond of saying 20 years ago, "Nothing is sacred while
the legislature is in session." Certainly nothing is certain when matters are
put in the hands of lawyers and politicians.
That said, we want to be careful that we put our attention and energies
in areas where we can achieve our desired results. A Skipper on the West Coast
has asked me the following question several times of the years: "What are we
trying to accomplish?" Once we know that, the course of action is often very
I share the concerns that many of you have with the ACLU's actions
vis-a-vis Scouting. I think their actions are in this instance misplaced and
possibly misguided. I would like to caution everyone, though, that just
because we may not agree with their actions here and now, we should not be
acting in an un-scoutlike manner and blanket condemn them. I personally feel
that the ACLU has been force for good in the United States. Do I agree with
everything they do? No. Do I respect those who disagree with them? Yes. Do
I want to see blanket condemnations of the ACLU and those who sympathize with
them on Seascout-Net? No.
Let's keep political discussions off the list, shall we? I'm glad that
information about the ACLU suit was sent to the list. We all need to know
about matters that affect our Scouting involvement. If you feel that BSA may
not be responding appropriately to the ACLU suit, I would urge you to first
discuss your concerns with your local council Scout Executive before charging
ahead and contacting your congressman.
Remember: Know what you're trying to accomplish.
Remember: Nothing is sacred while the legislature is in session.
Now back to what we all are being handsomely paid for ... ;)
