Dear Friends in Scouting,

colleague, mentor, Michael Strain. After dealing with nearly a year of
fatigue and other health issues, "the Skipper," as he is most fondly known
by most, has been diagnosed with terminal bone cancer, which is at an
The former National Commodore has dedicated his life to the youth of this
country through the Sea Scouting program. In everything he does, Mr.
Strain works to positively impact the lives of young adults -- never
seeking glory for himself or his achievements.
While Mike remains hopeful of a few more Summer Cruises, the doctors'
prognosis is in the ball park of four weeks to three months at best.
Despite this, Mike's spirit and sense of humor are intact. He is on heavy
pain medication but has opted not to pursue a path of chemotherapy or other
treatments that would further lessen the quality of life. When I spoke with
him this morning, Mike was positively spiritual, reflecting on life in

becoming maudlin. He said he's pleased "to have lived a good life."
Because Mr. Strain has touched so many lives and has so many friends among
us, it seemed only right to give you a chance to contact him, if you wish.
Mike is in at-home hospice care. In other words, someone is looking after
him 24 hours a day, his brother, Peter, being a primary care giver. Mike's
energy is limited, so please use discretion in making contact. His address
