Seascout-Net Mail Archive for October of 1998: RE: Uniforms

I dont know why it should be confidential or off net..
Ship number/location: Ship 1659, Spring (Houston) Texas
Formal Uniform type: Tropical white shirt, standard markings,
white slacks. Pretty rarely worn, just Bridge of Honor,
parade type service projects, etc. We wear Ship T-shirts
and whatever pants for meetings, etc.
program strength: We are currently pretty active, but the main
core of our youth will be heading out for college at the
end of this year, this hasn't been a great recruiting year so
far. I think as we get our next long cruise set up, we will
pull in more youth.
ship type (White, Blue, or Red?) I guess close to purple. We
follow some more traditional things like the landship,
more-or-less standard uniforms considering our Southern
location, we offer the Apprentice/Ordinary/Able/Quartermaster
advancement, but we don't push it as many of our boys are
working on Eagle and only one of our girls has expressed
interest. On the other hand, we don't do much sailing. Our
last three long cruises were Philmont, Florida Sea Base for
SCUBA, and Boundary Waters canoeing. We focus on
high adventure. We are looking into a split sailing and SCUBA
trip for our next long cruise. I think that our direction is likely
to be more boating in the future, depending a lot on who we
can get for adult leaders.
Comments: I think it is critical for the youth to determine the
uniform. A big part of the purpose of Venturing is to let the
youth take (supervised) control of their lives and clothing is
a big part of what teenagers want to control.
