I share the feelings of some of the comments regarding big boats.
We finally got a 53'6" (registed legally at 48, what luck!) twin diesel
a year ago. Prior to that we had a 36. Today we hauled this boat for
the first time. So we know what budget means at this moment. Crew is
about to find out what work really means, launch on monday.
I would never consider going back down, unless there were no options.
With a bigger boat we now can have a bigger crew, which makes every
thing easier. Fundraising, recuriting, cruising and work. More bodies
to make the effort.
I find that many "newer" Skippers/Mates seem to be fearful of the
committment and show the symptoms. Nothing wrong with that, its human
nature. Just need to have support (which is our current problem).
Going off of memory, most of the Calif "big Boat" Skippers were Sea
Scouts as kids. Wonder if that makes a difference? Not sure that it
does, cause I know of quite a few that were not Sea Scouts as kids as
Anyway, those are my thougts right wrong or otherwise.
