Greetings to all Net members. I recently signed on to the Net but am not
currently actively involved in Sea Scouting. I've had a 20+ year hiatus from
Sea Scouting (Active duty in the US Army) but my roots go back to when I was a
Sea Scouter at age 14. My ship, 329 Swarthmore, PA (Leo Maris) had a 45
footer that we cruised annually on the east coast's intercoastal waterway,
including the Chesapeake Bay. At the time, there were a number of viable
ships in the Valley Forge Council. Annually, we had rendezvous in the
northern Chesapeake Bay which were attended by ships from a number of other
councils. I earned the Quartermaster award prior to moving onto college.
I've read with interest the dialogue regarding donations of equipment. As a
former Army logistician, I've been able to successfully "scour" the Department
of Defense system for stuff for my Army units. As you may be aware many items
are also available for donations to Scouting programs. The Internet has made
it easier to locate items available for donation. If anyone would like some
tips, please feel free to E-Mail me.
Also, it is important to work close with your local councils. Back in the
"olde" days our ship earned good PR for Sea Scouting by helping out at local
Boy Scout Camporees and activities. We usually signed on to assist in
campsite security and parking control. Needless to say, we stood out in our
bell-bottom jeans, work shirts and sailors caps!
