Congratulations on the new Ship.
Regarding the term "Exploring" vs. "Scouts", the basic choice as I
understand it is now Venturing or Learning for Life. You could choose
either but in either case Exploring will be an obsolete term.
By the sound of your fine group of young people, it appears that you
would be better off as Sea Scouts, in which case you have to face the
"un-cool" use the word "Scouts".
Chris Sokolov nailed the solution by suggesting emphasis on the Ships'
name. I would also suggest total focus on program with all the
attributes of fun, leadership, activity, training, career opportunities
and the like. Quality such as this will draw youth to the program
regardless of whatever negatives might be implied in the use of the word
Even this does not have to be a negative. Our Ship is entering its 40th
year and we have never had to make excuses for the fact that we are
Scouts. In the long run, you may find that youth who want nothing to do
with "Scouts" may not necessarily make good shipmates. On the other
hand, those that arn't concerned about "Scouts" most likely will make
the best shipmates and best leaders.
Best of Luck.
