My previous posting told of the good times on long cruise. There was
one sad note.
Picked up a voice mail message on Wednesday that brought bad tidings.
Diane McGee informed me that John, her husband of nearly 45 years had
passed on Monday. John was in a long and difficult recovery from a
I am happy that I was able to speak to John as recent as two weeks ago
to say hello. I'm sad that I was not able to stop by even for a few
short minutes to pay a personal visit (eventho I pass his neighorhood at
least 3 times a week for the last 2 years).
John was very supportive of Albatross. We met him when the Elks Lodge
started to sponsor us in the late 80's (he was a lifelong member) He
had owned several boats up to 24 feet over the years. We cruised
together many a time and he introduced Albatross to Santa Barbara Island
and the Painted Cave on Santa Cruz Island. The best memory of a cruise
was what we call "Hell Cruise". It was in April of 91 or 92 with the
old boat. Long and difficult night fighting a dragging anchor in a
sudden southerly swell at Coches Prietos Cove on Santa Cruz Island.
This trip was the only overnight trip Diane had ever made with John
(boating was his thing and not hers). We abanonded the anchor and cove
at midnight and moved to the only mooring on the south side of the
island. BY 7 am we were underway for home and John had decided to
stay. Weather radio reported "light and variable winds in the
channel". When we rounded the corner, we found winds clocking at least
35 and steep swells. BY the time John got in he faced 12 foot seas in
his 21 foot Sea Ray. I don't think Diane ever stepped aboard again!
John served as a Scoutmaster while he was stationed in Michigan. He was
never a Scout. He is survived by Diane and three adult daughters and
John is fondly remembered by all Albatross that knew him, and has always
been considered one of the crew. Any Albatross alumni who suscribe with
any memories and thoughts for Diane can refer them to me off list. I
will be speaking to Diane in the next few days, she would be happy to
