On May 29, 1998, the Long Beach Area Council (CA) held its first (and last)
annual Explorer Recognition Dinner at The Center at Sycamore Plaza in
The well-attended event featured a good dinner, ten awards and a great dance
Among the awards there were two which went to local Sea Scouts.
Johnny Bradford, Boatswain of the "Conquest", Ship 564, was named the Explorer
of the Year. It should be noted also that Johnny has recently earned both his
Eagle and Quartermaster Awards and both will be presented to him at our next
Bridge of Honor in November. The location has not been confirmed yet but we
hope it will be a big ship permanently moored in the Long Beach area. More
Lee Bradford, Skipper of the "Conquest", was honored to receive the William H.
Spurgeon III Award.
