Austin, TX is Capital Area Council (Austin and surrounding 12 counties), 18,000
registered youth. Sorry to say it, but there's no Sea Scout program here. When
my job transferred me here from south Florida 2 years ago I went to the council
office and inquired about "Sea Scout Ships" in the council. The receptionist
though I was talking about the boats available at the council camp properties.
After a long explanation on my part (which did no good) I found a DE who
remembered hearing that such a thing exists, unfortunately not here. I have
since found out that there is one Explorer Post registered as a Sea Scout Ship,
but I think that was just a unit coding coincidence. Their DE tells me they have
no uniforms, advancement, regular/formal meeting. It's just a bunch of Explorers
who get together to sail occasionally. I've been told that 200 miles east of us
in the Houston/Galvaston area there is a very active Sea Scout program. Starting
in Austin and going up the Colorado River there's a serious of dams and the 7
highland lakes. Lake Travis is relatively close to Austin and has a lot of
boating activity, especially in the summer months.
I've half-heartedly inquired about starting a Ship, but don't have a sponsor, nor
any interest from any of the professionals. On top of that I bought a house high
and dry on the opposite side of the town from the lakes (1 hour drive for me to
docks, marinas, or boat launch). And I don't own, nor have access to a boat. So
my efforts so far haven't been any more than talk.
If your transferee has more ambition than me and starts a ship, I'll sign on as
