Back in the 70's there was a formal study to merge Boy Scout, Girl Scouts, and I
think 4-H and camp fire. I think the proposed name was going to be "Youth/USA". The
political interests of each party kept the effort from going anywhere. So, BSA came
up with the name "Scouting/USA" (remember that).
I've been involved with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts enough to form the opinion that
they will NEVER merge. BSA tends to be run by right wing fanatics, while GSUSA tends
to be run by bleeding heart liberals; extreme opposites. That's doesn't mean every
Scoutmaster nor troop leader fits these molds, but the organizational leadership sure
does. Furthermore, there's a degree of distrust and dislike between them. Once
again, troops don't have problems with each other, but the large entrenched
organizations sure do.
