Does anyone know if the grant for attendance at US
Sailing's Instructor Trainer Courses will continue into 1998?
Several of the leaders in my ship received scholarships
during 1997, but only two of us were able to register and
attend. The others want to go in 1998, if their funding will
The scholarship covered registration and expenses for either
the Keelboat Instructor Certification Course or the Small
Boat Instructor Course. We took the keelboat course, and
were impressed by the trainers, the boats (Colgate 26), and
the location at the feet of the Statute of Liberty. However,
the course was designed more as an evaluation toward
certification as a professional instructor with over half the
time spent testing our teaching and sailing skills, not
teaching us how to teach sailing. It had limited utility for our
program since we aren't affiliated with a professional sailing
school (only instructors with a registered school can issue
US Sailing keelboat certificates) and don't really need the
"certified instructor" next to our name in the advertisements.
I have heard that the small boat instructor course is
different. Can anyone who has taken that course comment?
All that said, it was a great weekend, and you can't beat
the price. I highly recommend that BSA continue the
