I'm not certain that the above type of posting develops the comraderie
originally intended by the creation of Sea Scout Net.
Since the rather terse note illustrates the Balkanization of Sea
Scouting since "The Slaughter of 1965", perhaps some comments are in
Sea Scouts once all once spoke the same language. BSA eliminated Air
Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Rover Scouts in 1965. They also "dumbed
down" Sea Scouting's specialized terminology, titles and structure.
It's not surprising that the "Slaughter of 1965" might have had a few
victims. Personally, I'm happy to see Boatswain and BnM replace Senior
Crew Leader and Deputy Senior Crew Leader. I wish that we'd officially
drop the last one of those "Explorer" terms foisted upon us, that absurd
"Crew Leader" and go back to our original, nautical "Coxswain".
I saw my Air Scouting destroyed. It's now the generic Aviation
Exploring. There're no ranks, no special uniform, no special terminology
and no flying. Actually, soloing in Air Scouting AND in Sea Scouting was
fun. Now that's all gone as is the program!
As a formerly active Marine, I have seen many attempts to destroy the
Corps. Thoughout history, attempts to destroy organizations and cultures
begin with the neutralization of their unique identity through generic
language, generic uniforming and generic activities.
One of the great strengths of Sea Scouting is its ability to adapt
to many tastes and interests. I don't care if a skipper wishes to be a
"Grand Poobah" or an "Advisor" nor if the council chairman for Sea
Exploring or Cluster Representative does or does not want to be the
squadron commodore. It's not important as long as we don't use
revisionist history whilst losing our proud traditions and don't fight
