On 7/25 Ship 6 of Norwalk participated in a Safty at Sea Seminar sponsored by
the Storm Trysail Club and held at Larchmomt Yacht Club in NY. The event
vocused on big boat safety/seamanship/emergency proceedures/MOB/heavy weather
handling and Navigation (based on long distance runs). The seminar was
targeted at the teenagers in the regions yacht club junior programs. These
teens will be participating in the local 'Beachpoint/ Darade' Regatta Series.
For many it will be their first large boat experience. Over 100 youth
participated. The role of Ship 6 was twofold. In the A.M. session we were
guest instructors for an entry level navigation class.
In the P.M. session Skipper Bill Austin held an indoor advanced concepts
navigation session. The crew members went on water (each assigned to a
different boat) to assist in teaching
MOB /quick stop/ sail changes and reefing. Owners reported that the scouts
skill and experience in these areas shone through when put to the test.
The impact of our presence was measureable and we feel that this valueable
contact will bear fruit well into the future. Playing to a serious audience
we were taken seriously.
I know that Sea Scouts nation wide are serious in and about what they are
doing. I can tell you from experience - PLAY IT LOUD and you will be heard!!
