hmmmm...i feel like talking about my ship...i'm on ship 161, the belmonster,
out of redwood city, california...we have a 40 foot ketch called the jolly
roger as our main boat, and an assortment of smaller sailboats...let's see...
what have we been up to?
amr '97...okay, so this was a while ago, but it's pretty important...the
belmonster used to be amazing at regatta (scuttlebutt in 37 seconds or
something like that in 1967) but hadn't done regatta in something like 15
yrs...so we went to amr, with much coercing from me, with no practice
whatsoever. literally. i was teaching people the knot as we were competing
in bos'n's chair. we took schooner...
june cruise...we didn't run aground!!! last june cruise we ran aground 3
times in san pablo bay, but this june cruise happened without mishap ( aside
from a power spike from our rheostat wreaking havoc on our elecrtrical
system) and was quite fun...
richmond rendevous... sailed to richmond friday nite...saturday took 3rd in
one of the races, but our jib ripped in the second race, preventing further
competition... met a lot of people from other ships, esp. sea otter and tiger
shark...learned that i wouldn't have been able to go with the albatross to
mexico even if i wasn't going to junior olympics for waterpolo 'cos they
don't allow girls on their ship... sunday sailed home without mishap, aside
from me falling off the mast while under way (perhaps i should explain...we
had the jib and mainsail down, and the flag halyard came off the belaying
pin, i shimmied 15 feet up, the ferry went by, i came down 'cos of the wake,
went back up in a bo's'n's chair, retrieved the wayward halyard, and when the
people on deck took one turn off the winch, i fell from the spreaders down
about 7 feet before i caught myself on a shroud and they grabbed the halyard
i was on...gravity check, anyone?
redwood rendevous...in our very own redwood city...tug of war... first place
in boat building/racing the boat we built, ice cream making (don't ask me how
it was, i'm vegan) ...first place in water baloon launching (and winning an
impromptu water baloon fight with the intrepid of palo alto)...jump rope...a
rad guy from the chaser named joe... trying to take our larsen out and
realizing that even though we told the skipper that we wanted to take it out,
he didn't bother to bring the key... the dance... um...yea...so that's what
the belmonster's been up to... oh! i had a question...i heard a rumor that
one of the sea scout ships in so cal has a submarine...is there any substance
