Fellow Sea Scouters:
Please accept my apologies for the message we all received earlier
this evening from one of our list's subscribers. The listowners had
written to this gentleman as well as another to explain what we have
been forced to do to maintain a Scouting attitude on the list. We have
been very patient with these two gentlemen, explaining the rules of the
list and giving them more than a few opportunities to work within the
rules of the list (and, we believe, Scouting).
Unfortunately, in the course of giving these two gentlemen so much
leeway, we have lost many subscribers who simply couldn't take their
level of acrimony and personal attacks. We felt really disappointed
that we lost so many subscribers because of their actions, and it was
only as a last resort that we took steps to prevent more of the same.
The letter that was forwarded to the list earlier this evening was
a _private_ communication. We're sorry that you had to be troubled with
this. The gentleman who anonymously sent it used a pseudononymous email
address to bypass the list's safeguards. We will endeavor to take steps
to prevent a recurrence of this.
Seascout-Net is not a moderated or censored list. We do ask,
however, that discussions take place within the spirit of the Scout Law,
including such points as "A Scout is Courteous" and "A Scout is
Friendly." If you are in doubt what we mean about that, you may wish to
review the Seascout welcome message at
<http://www.rt.scouter.com/seascout-net/welcome.html>. We hope you
agree that abiding by the Scout Law in participating on Seascout-Net
will make our discussions more pleasant and productive.
If, on the other hand, you enjoy personal attacks and public
criticism of individuals, we would encourage you to participate in the
other list that our anonymous writer recommended. If you need its email
address, you can find it in the Seascout-Net archive.
We apologize once again for taking your time with this private
matter and will endeavor to continue to provide the best support we can
of the Sea Scouting program. We welcome your feedback, which can be
sent to us at <firstname.lastname@example.org>.
