I was very skeptical about the vinyl at first. So I asked members of
the local sail club about it. I don't know if vinyl is the proper name for
the material, it is probably some fancy muti-sylable petrochemical molecular
compound. But our sail club Commodore says that it is the same material that
sail companies use to put on the emblems for Lightning, Hoby Cat, Butterfly,
The Way I look at it, we have to scrape the bottom of every boat every
year when they come out of the water. Even if the sail emblem only lasts a
couple years, for $8.48 I don't mind. Besides, my crew members need service
hours, the extra work will keep them busy and out of trouble.
The one we made has already lasted 2 seasons and it doesn't show any
signs of peeling or discoloration. I wish I could say the same for paint at
