scouts-l Mail Archive for September of 2000: Uhhh, you'll probably never see that donation....

All UW forms say that you can specify who you would LIKE the money to go to,
not who the money WILL go to. There is no guarantee you will get the money
you assign, or that the money you specify will go to who you specify. That
piece of paper just makes you feel like you control that cash once it leaves
The only way to change things is, if your UW stops funding your council, you
stop donating to UW. Whatever other things they do that may be good or bad is
another issue you have to debate with yourself.
They still fund the council where I work and the council where I live,
however when UW comes by and asks yearly I always tell them "no", since I
keep putting more than my fair share of cash into a program that produces
youth who turn out to be among the leaders in America, whether in costs of
uniforms or in the cost of donations.
If I wish to give to the other organizations, I give directly to them, not
through UW. Is it a little harder? Yes. Do the organizations get the entire
amount I donate and not pay someone else who found out they could make a
living collecting donations from people? Yes. Do those groups come out ahead
because of my effort? Of course.
