Some earlier posts suggested designating UW contributions to councils or units.
Please do not suggest that donations, normally made to the UW, should now
be designated to specific units, or that donations should be made to
specific units instead of the UW.
The funds received by councils from UW and FOS are used to operate the
council, and to provide all the services units need in order function as
units of the Boy Scouts of America, with all its' many benefits. This
includes salaries and expenses of the professional staff, whose value some
of you have questioned, but who frequently get involved in aspects of
administering this program that we volunteers don't even want to be
involved in. It includes the salaries of the office and support staff who
do the processing of advancements and tour permits, and all the other stuff
we call them about on a daily basis and often take for granted. It
provides for the costs of operating the service centers and of providing
and maintaining facilities like camps with dining halls, campsites with
showers and latrines, and swimming pools. It provides for program and
training materials, for costs of marketing the program, etc.
These are only a few of the expenses paid for by funds received from UW and
FOS. Have you ever received a mailing from your council service center
with "FREE" written in the upper right corner of the envelope? Neither
have I! If these funds are not forthcoming, the council will be unable to
fulfill their responsibility to meet your needs. There are some, arrogant
enough to believe, that they can function without the council, and all that
the council provides. If the councils fail, so do we, and these "stand
alone units" will become nothing more than neighborhood boys clubs without
the benefits provided by the Boy Scouts of America.
UW and FOS funds are absolutely critical for the continued operation of our
councils and the services they provide.
Designate UW funds for the BSA, or if uncomfortable with that, send your
contribution directly to the council as a new or increased FOS
contribution, but do not siphon off these funds for individual
units. Units have other means of raising money for their equipment and
