We have a rule in our Troop, "if the adults can't justify why the Scouts do
anything, then we drop it from the program". That prevents rules being created
just because the adults say so. That being said, we needed to update our New
Scout Parents Guide this year, so we assigned a Scout from the PLC and an adult
from our committee to work on the guide together. The PLC and adults were
allowed to add or object to anything and any changes made had to be approved by
the PLC and Committee. In the end, no changes were needed, just clarifications.
Also, our Troop encourages Woodbadge Ticket Items be directed toward the adult
working with Scouts as much as possible. Instead of organizing a Troop service
project or JLT, we "highly" suggest the adult work as an advisor with the Scout
or Scouts organizing the activities. I think working with a Scout to write your
Troop Bylaws would be a great Ticket Item and go a long way towards the Scouts
and adults building respect toward each other.
Of course, if your leader is a Bob White, they already have this figured out.
