We went to Colorado this year and used walkie-talkies with a range of
between .25 and .5 mile. As long as we could maintain line of sight, we
could go maybe .75 mile. Not great, but enough that a quick change of
direction was much easier on the other vehicles as they had enough time to
brake and see what was happening. In a long line, I think I'd recommend
either stronger units (maybe mobile CB units with a range of 2 miles) or
several keyed to the same frequency, sort of a chain of receivers concept.
It's best value was scheduling the never schedulable "potty break".
