Thoughts on mergers and un-merging.
I am with the guys that voted "No" on the merger some years ago in Piedmont,
CA and somewhere in FL. Threats and arrogance on the part of BSA are usually
hollow. Councils don't NEED a professional staff although having a few good
professional scouters that have bought into the movement as opposed to the
organization is really nice. They are needed in a large council if carefully
supervised by volunteers.
Mildred or Josie can run the scout shop with a modest amount of supervision.
A small council doesn't NEED to own a camp although it is nice. They can be
an expensive headache to have. Volunteers can make a go of it given the
necesary drive and focus. A hands on executive board with willing
volunteers, a good district, works for me.
Smaller and community based councils with clumps of councils organized into
cartels to own and operate camps make sense and provide some means of
rationalizing the number of camps and programs.
