Well, no: if the subject is off=topic, it doesn't belong on the list.
Taking the discussion to private e-mail or a newsgroup only serves to
honor the purpose of the list.

Again, no: that's entirely a function of the poster's e-mail reader. I
*have* been on some lists where it's almost impossible to reply only to
the poster (the listserv jiggers the "reply to" field to just the
listserv), and this is much better, IMHO.
