scouts-l Mail Archive for August of 2000: Re: Troop Report card and Junior Leader evaluations?

Catching up on some back-reading. Almost a month ago, David & Monica Harris
<harrises@EARTHLINK.NET> asked about written material to use in evaluating
Junior Leader performance. I've been reading "backwards" and haven't seen
anything that really answred the question.
What we have started doing is two-fold. We start with the "job descriptions"
in the SM Junior Leader Training kit, then have each scout use that as a
basis to establish his personal goals for the next 6 months in his position.
Also to identify his resources and means of measuring performance. The Scout
sets his own measurements standards, with support from "up the ladder". I
work with the SPL on his goal sheet, and he works with the other junior
leaders (with guidance from me) on theirs.
Each scout puts his down on paper, and that is used to periodically monitor
and evaluate performance - by the scout.
We've only been doing this since January, but it seems to have the support of
the Scouts. The JLTC descriptions are very broad, and have to be customized
to each troop/patrol. Who better to do that than the scouts themselves?
