My younger son was fortunate this summer to be able to attend the summer
camp operated by Maui County Council. The camp is only open three weeks. He
attended as part of his old troop in San Diego. He reports the camp is nice,
has some skeeters, the chow was decent, and met all his expectations as a
first summer camp experience. It was not a merit badge mill. He felt as if
he earned his three merit badges and had time for considerable fun to boot.
The troop had been working for two years to make this a viable financial
This is interesting. My lad, the scout camper, related to me that when he
was at camp several of the adults in other troops were bemused to see his
uniform patches in the chow line and at other times. The left sleeve has our
own unique unit CSP with a Lone Scout emblem below it. He was also wearing a
shiny new Star Scout badge. In a sea of mostly similar CSPs and red-white
numerals the shirt stood out.
The bemused scouters were curious how he ended up going to camp in Hawaii.
They also wanted to know if he really did live in Egypt. These were valid
questions that we had discussed prior to his going to camp with his old San
Diego based troop. He had the right answers of course. The scouters were
also interested in the Lone Scout aspects of his scouting and how it was for
him to be living in Egypt. Although Lone Scouting is mentioned in the Boy
Scout Handbook as an option, most scouts and scouters seldom run across a
live Lone Scout.
He was tickled to be singled out by these curious scouters and a few scouts.
We don't get the opportunity to interact with other scouts and he was
pleased to see how well complete strangers were able to work together to
achieve common goals.
Next summer they are going to Camp Mataguay operated by Desert Pacific
Council. He has already signed himself up to attend with them.
