I have to throw my $.25 in here for whatever it is worth.
early on in my e-mail Scouting career, I asked a pretty standard question.
my best answer came off line and the responder explained that he was
responding off-line, that it was my answer to do with as I needed/wished,
and that if I-the person who raised the question_ wanted to share his
response on-line, that was ok, but it was MY choice. he also stated that he
almost always responded in this way, leaving the choice upto the initial
this approach has two sides--
one, it avoids some of the stormy threads we have seen on the list, and if
the response contains a correction for the initial sender, they avoid the
electronic embarassment of being corrected in front of the entire list.
the flip side, as some have suggested, is that it keeps the responders
information from appearing on the list; that may be good if the responder
has a lack of self-control or is not behaving in a Scout-like manner. on
the other hand, some of the responses I have seen and received have been
magnificent and very worth sharing with the entire list.
I had never given any thought to summarizing all the responses I receive on
a particular question and then sharing them with the list, and at the risk
of sounding selfish, I am not sure I want to take the time to do this. I
know multiple responses takeup band-width, but getting information is why I
joined the list, not to spend my time summarizing answers. everyone will
draw different conclusions from the answers anyway, so a summary, except
incase of official policy, which is spelled out in writing, may not be
worth much anyway. the best example of this is the water thread I started
and the responses ranging from use nothing, to fizzies (which I had
completely forgotten about!).
just my $.25.
I think this list is a great resource, and hope that all of us can continue
to both give and receive from the list, avoiding public criticism of
others, leaving that and the me too! responses for off-list. I am not a
list moderator, but I vote for people being able to put their individual
answers on the list and let us sort thru them ourselves.
