What you describe brings back some good memories.
I grew up in San Diego. The neighborhood had a strong Jewish influence that
grew stronger over time because there was an Orthodox meeting place within
easy walking distance. I am a gentile btw. At one time I was on the
"approved for dating" list maintained by the Jewish mothers in the
neighborhood. What a great place to grow up.
As my friends grew into Bar/Bat Mitzvah age I went to 14 but not, of course
in the Orthodox synagogue. The parties were open though. At one time my
troop, a mixed breed group, had enough scouts from the neighborhood to have
a kosher patrol. The 2-3 Muslims also joined that patrol as they filtered in
and out forming some really fast friendships that have continued well into
There were three lads, all strong believers in their faiths that completed
Eagle together. The same night at the same BoR. The normal tradition would
have been for there to have been three separate courts of honor. The boys
went to their parents and the SM at the time asking that they be invested in
one court of honor. I was working out of the country at the time. The three
lads, Roman Catholic, Orthodox Jew and Sunni Muslim stood in front of the
assembled crowd and became Eagles together. The guests filled the 400 seat
church to SRO. They have each attended and/or participated in each other's
weddings. This is what scouting is about.
