I stayed with my youth troop from age 11 as a new scout in 1959 until after
graduating from university. From Tenderfoot to Eagle and from rankest new
scout to being Scoutmaster twice. I finally left it when my work shifted me
abroad in 1973. Would I change any of that for myself? Not a chance. Would I
expect my two lads to do the same thing? Not a chance.
What worked for me doesn't work for my kids and I am happy for that. They
have had the freedom to do what works for them and not had "this is the way
I did it" forced upon them.
The Venture Patrol concept didn't work in one troop I was associated with
and is a howling success in another. Combining a troop with a co-located
Venture Crew complete with young women, in fact dominated by young women,
has worked really well in another venue. Flexibility to do what works for
the individual within the scouting movement is the key. Following the rules
lets this happen in a safe environment.
