scouts-l Mail Archive for August of 2000: Re: Why not non-denominational?
Mon Aug 14 2000 - 16:34:17 CDT
With all the discussion of non-denominational (not affixed to any one
denomination; i.e., especially within Christianity), and of inter-faith
(i.e., between two or more faiths, but usually leaving out one or more
faiths); why not use a more all-inclusive term, ALL-FAITH, for our Scout
To do this successfully, one must, of course, leave out all references
gleaned from any and all religious texts. One must also remove all religious
symbols from chapel areas. The chaplain at Beaumont Scout Reservation,
Greater Cleveland Council, has developed a flag or banner which is acceptable
to ALL faiths. It is simply the Youth Religious Square Knot superimposed on
the Universal Scouting Emblem.
He has submitted this design to National for approval, and I believe it
will fly. I sincerely hope that these ideas will become broadly accepted.
