Our troop, over the years, has adopted the budget method. Boys buying the
groceries with an adult who understands the process usually present few
problems but many times the adult supervising the purchasing ends up being a
parent who wants the boys to have lots of extras or who believes that the
most expensive brands have to be bought and you end up with some extremely
expensive meals. One patrol might be eating on $10 per person while another
might be eating for $25 per person.
To alleviate these disparities and parent discontent we use a budget. We
originally used $3 per meal but in recent years have adjusted to $3 for
breakfast and lunch and $4 for evening meals. This seems to work and
everyone eats well.
