I want everyone to first know that Jessiann was VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS TRIP.
To the point of scheduling almost ALL of our time with visiting friends,
family, Scouters and eating out at some of our favorite places...places
which we don't have in Minnesota (although we're collecting some new
Jessica wrote to everyone earlier:
>Just a short note to let you guys know what's up...we'll be heading
>to the Nashville, TN area during the week of August 14 thru 18th for
>an Army conference for Mike. We'll be staying at the Opryland
>Hotel and Conference Center while there and would LOVE to meet
>up with some of our Scouts-L friends if possible. Of course, Mike
>will be tied up with meetings during the days but our nights are free
>so let me know if any of you would like to get together. You can
>write me at this address, Mike at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at
>Also, if anyone has recommendations on a good Chinese buffet or
>Mexican restaurant, I'd appreciate those...
Well, don'tcah know that no sooner than I told Jessi that we're going to
spend a GREAT week together in Music City (I was to make a presentation on
what and how I created the group where I work at as an Army civilian), than
the Army ("THAT ARMY!!", it was reported to me that she said once she heard
from me...) decided within a WEEK:
* to make me the Executive Officer for a unit being deployed next month to
* to "unmake me" the Executive Officer of that same unit.
* to "deploy me" to Kosovo as a Public Affairs Staff Officer with a UN
* to change their mind and place me on a "short list" for a special project
at the Pentagon
* and finally to send me orders the NIGHT BEFORE I WAS TO REPORT to come to
Washington and to serve as the Deputy overseeing the activities and events
of the 10th anniversary of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
(USAR Task Force Ten)
I am now living out of a hotel room in Crystal City, Virginia (a long
football toss from the Pentagon) and it appears I may be here for anywhere
from three months to a year.
(yes, you *heard me* correctly, a year. In a hotel room. With a laptop
I do feel honored...out of the seven possible and available senior Public
Affairs officers in the Army Reserve, I was chosen (along with my boss, LTC
Jeff Keane, who was also my boss last year while deployed in Central
America) to come here and put together the plan in which thousands of Army
Reservists (and I personally hope LOTS of Scouts and Scouters!!) will
participate to recognize the sacrifices of the American citizen-soldier
during a world-wide crisis ten years ago this fall, winter and early spring.
This means that once again, I will be of LIMITED SERVICE, but service
nevertheless, to Scouters and Scouts of the National Capitol Area Council
(NCAC), one of the ten largest local Councils in the BSA. So yeah, Pete,
Skip, Mike...others...you can let those in the old George Washington
District know that I'm back for a short while.
I sincerely ask for all of your prayers as Jessi and I start another period
of time away from each other for this adventure. It was her intention that
if I went overseas, it would be only for a short period of time and I'll be
back in time for a cruise trip she's been trying to save up for. We'll
still take the trip.
I also ask those of you interested to please send me suggestions on ways
that youth service agencies can participate and if you would feel that if
we offered a special patch or other items, would it help. You may send
your suggestions to me at email@example.com or to
(Please don't send them here; I would love it if you would, but I have had
terrible problems trying to get my email from the USSSP's server -- as many
of us have had problems accessing the site over the past couple of weeks;
most importantly, I want to attempt to get as much public input as possible
into the final plan!)
Finally, I am happy to be back with all of you once again. My laptop and I
will work hard to answer your questions, to listen to you and to be here
with everyone else every day; I can't promise right now that I'll be able
to be on here every day...but I'll try my best given my purpose for being
here, and the server problems.
"Rose" will join me from time to time, and I'll be going back to visit with
her for a short bit as the tour goes on. But I hope that I will be able to
fill some of my free time with Scouting "stuff".
