scouts-l Mail Archive for August of 2000: Sleep Walking

While at Webelos resident camp earlier this week I had a new experience that
I could use some advice from the group on. We had a young man sleep walk for
the first time, according to his father who was also at camp. Our camp was
awoken to a blood curdling scream & yells for help! The camper had sleep
walked out of camp and down a steep wooded embankment into a ravine. He woke
up at the bottom of the ravine (without much needed glasses & shoes) & that's
when the screaming began. He was quickly retrieved, returned to his tent, and
calmed as much as possible.
The next night we made sure his tent flaps were tied & made sure he wasn't
wearing socks when he went to bed. We thought this might circumvent any
further sleep walking sessions.
In addition to sleep walking....we had to deal with a raccoon invasion, and
severe thunderstorm the very same night. To say we got very little sleep
would be an understatement. Even so....we still had a GREAT time at camp!
Any recommendations on how to deal with sleep walking in the future? This was
quite scary for the boy & all the leaders. I'd like to be prepared to help
this boy deal with this in the future if possible. Any thoughts would be
