It's the only "tip" those guys and gals get.
I think it was Mark Twain who said, "I can live for a week on a good
I have 2 "high-maintenance" boys. My days are much easier when I remember to
praise their behavior. I see them sit and stand a little straighter, they
smile more and are more willing to cooperate with my requests. It works the
same in my Den, Pack, with Parents and Camp Staff. It works on me, too.
My husband and I took our 8 year old Cub Scout to "Adventure Camp". We made
sure that if any of the staff was doing a good job, we told them right away
and did not wait for the comment sheet at the end. In fact, as we were
leaving, we got complimented by the staff! They were impressed that for the
entire 4 days that we were up there, we were either in class A's or in class
B's (our pack t-shirt & scout shorts). We were told that a majority of the
staff noticed the "uniformed leadership" and was encouraged to wear theirs
properly and more often. I certainly stood a little taller and straighter
Most of that staff moved to another one of our Council's camps to work with
the Boy Scout Troops for Summer Camp. I was able to return the compliment
with my older son (Tenderfoot) in the form of a large box of homemade
brownies for the Camp Staff, a couple of pictures from Adventure Camp and a
thank you note. Well received, I heard.
Don't forget to compliment the parents of Scouts in your Troop and Pack,
fellow committee members and spouses as well as your children. It's even part
of one of the Achievements for Bear....
BTW (By The Way), Thank you to everyone on this list for your interesting
comments, entertaining news, thoughtful insights, generous help and for doing
your best for the boys. You know you needed this compliment.....
