Hello the List!
Interesting that we are discussing this topic right now, as our
D.E. (U.S.E.) just announced his resignation this week. I haven't had
a chance to talk to him in person, so I don't know the exact reasons
for his leaving, but this is a young man (25) who has been involved in
Scouting since he was a second-grade Wolf Cub Scout. He has earned the
Arrow of Light and Eagle. He served on camp staff for 10 years before
becoming a professional, including Business Manager, Program Director
and Camp Director. The volunteers in the District have been very
pleased with his work. Just a couple months ago we were talking, in a
group, and he commented that he wouldn't be around much longer because
BSA would be wanting him to move to another Council. At that time he
seemed fully intentioned to make Professional Scouting his life's
work. Now, suddenly, he is leaving for a position outside of Scouting.
There's something wrong with the system.
Yesterday there was an ad in the Help Wanted section for an "Entry
Level Executive Position" The ad reads "Non profit organization has
immediate opening in the Marshfield area. 4 year degree required.
Responsibilities include: sales, public relations, fundraising,
service. Excellent starting salary, benefits & job flexibility. Great
opportunity to join an organization that promotes physical fitness &
the great outdoors."
Now that may be some other non-profit organization, but I really don't
think so. In fact, since I'm not currently employed, I'm thinking
about sending in my resume just to see if it really is our Council's
ad. The problem I have, assuming that it is Samoset Council, is why
don't they say who they are in the ad? Every other ad in the
"Administrative/Professional" section of the paper includes the name
of the company/organization advertising (the United Way even has an ad
right above ours.) So, why the secrecy? Is this ad misleading
(especially the salary part)?
