I second Jim's remark. We always plan a special "new guys" hike. It
usually takes place in the Fall. The whole Troop does the hike, but, it is
indeed quite short and over reasonably level terrain.
We don't formally pair them up, but, the leadership boys are responsible for
helping the little guys along (as they always are, they're just a little
more on the alert) A lot of time is spent stopping along the way, adjusting
straps, and perhaps taking out and carring that 12 pound flashlight he
packed! (I believe in the value of experience so, while we do teach what to
pack, we don't inspect)
A little guy wearing his backpack "for real" for the first time is a sight
to behold! I've had more than one boy topple backwards onto his back like a
turtle and get stuck!
I have picked up more than a few little stories to tell at some of the guys
future Eagle Courts of honor!
