We just returned from 8 days paddling in Upper Canada and
experienced only one mosquito bite on our right foot between sandal
straps. The following is our field recommendation for insect repellents ...
ON CLOTHING ... use a 0.5% Permethrin clothing treatment, such as
Coulston's Duranon Tick Repellent, or Sawyer's Permethrin Tick
Repellent. Both are available as a 6 ounce aerosol can or 6 ounce
pump spray bottle from sporting goods, outdoor recreation and mail
order companies. Spray all of your outer clothing and gear (tents and
flys, too) before you leave on your high adventure or week at summer
camp. One treatment is effective for 2 weeks and including weekly
launderings. Permethrin repels and kills mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers,
mites, spiders, fleas and body lice ! Permethrin is a slow-acting
insecticide and the only insecticide established by the USFDA, USDA
and USEPA for use directly on humans. When applied to clothing and
allowed to dry, the insecticide is once removed from the skin.
Permethrin is standard issue to our military when working and living
in the field. One Permethrin can treats two sets of long-sleeved,
long-legged clothing ... then after treatment, leave the can at home.
ON SKIN, Mosquitoes... We found a new microencapsulated, time-
release 20% deet repellent lotion worked wonders to repel mosquitoes
for over 20 hours: Sawyer Controlled-Release Deet Formula. We used
the Controlled Release Deet in the morning, after applying sunblock,
and was effective through the day, especially at sunset when
mosquitoes were intense, and continued to work early the next
morning (5:30am) when the mosquitoes were still out. Fantastic!
It is a sweat-proof, waterproof, non-greasy, nonsticky, vanishing
lotion. Only soap and water would wash it off. The microencapsulation
make the deet low odor and understand it reduces deet skin absorption
toxicity by 90% compared to 20% deet-alcohol sprays. We purchased
Controlled Release Deet at our local drug store. We also found
~20% deet-alcohol sprays (Off, Repell, Cutters) were effective for
only 2 hours.
ON SKIN, Biting Flies... We used a 17% Deet with a black fly repellent
and a synergist: Sawyer Gold Composite Insect Repellent. It was very
effective during the day against the nuisance of biting (black, blow
and deer) flies and mosquitoes, but only lasted about 2 hours for each
Good paddling. HUT !
