scouts-l Mail Archive for August of 2000: Lone Scout Program
Fri Aug 04 2000 - 14:23:00 CDT
I've been more or less out of touch with Scouts-L, and with our former troop where I was Asst SM and my son a 2nd class scout, these past 10 months since moving 60 miles away to a rural location. Now I find an opportunity to again seek the Wisdom of the List. My boy joined his troop at summer camp last month and came back excited about picking up the trail toward eagle - I think the break was actually helpful to his outlook and attitude. Our troop commissioner discussed the lone scout program with my son and he is anxious to go for it and it might be a good solution for him. Distance, school and job commitments prevent either of us from attending weekly troop meetings but outings with the old troop are still possible. In the meantime he could still work on rank and merit badge requirements. I would like to hear your opinions on the lone scout program and how to make it effective. My son has asked me to be his lone scout counselor, which I'm delighted to do, but I'm open!
to any advice you may have about problems this might create in a father-son relationship. As a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader I'm already sensitive to the not-too-hard, not-too-easy dilema of leading your own son's unit.
Thanks for your help!
