Several people have e-mailed me asking for a copy of our Troop Report
Card. The boys fill out this Report Card to evaluate our troop at the
beginning of our Patrol Leaders Retreat each fall.
A point system is used to average the individual scores to come up with
one final set of troop scores. This form varies slightly from year to
A group discussion follows the evaluation as we explore our strengths
and weaknesses. The boys are pretty serious about this and have some
great ideas to express.
It helps us in developing goals for next year and provides
additional guidance for planning the upcoming year's program.
Scouts grade the troop using the standard A B C D F system. This is
their explanation of the various grade levels.
5 pts A = Excellent, Outstanding, Awesome, We Rule! Yes!
4 pts B = Good Job, Better than Average, Atta Boy, Getting Up There.
3 pts C = Average, OK, No Complaints, Gets the Job Done.
2 pts D = Below Average, Not Good, Something's Broken, Gotta Fix It!
1 pt F = Really Bad, Failed, No Pulse, Rock Bottom, Sucks Big Time!
0 pt N = No Opinion
They might give an "N" to something like summer camp if they
hadn't attended, etc. That item is dropped for the purpose of averaging.

I'm sure this is by no means a conclusive troop evaluation. There are
many other things that could be included. It has proven to be a good
way to start the boys thinking of the many facets of troop operation and
get some good creative juices flowing.
The evaluation is valuable. What is even more valuable is the
discussion that follows. The boys are very honest and open. This gives
you a format for tapping into their ideas and opinions.
The boys are the consumers. It's their troop and their program. So
it'simportant to know their viewpoint on the successful and less
successfulaspects of the troop operation. This way they are onboard and
aware ofwhat needs to be done in the next year. They are a part of it
from thevery start.
