scouts-l Mail Archive for July of 2000: Training Question

I just got our Council newsletter the other day, and
in the part for our District (this is a new District
policy from what it looks like, not Council), they
mentioned that Boy Scout Leader Training was coming
up. It also went on to say that ANY adult leader who
was not trained would not be re-registered when it
came time to recharter. Can they do this??
I know of one council near here that does exactly that. They give you six
months to get the basic training for your position (Cub Basic, SMF) and if
you don't do it you get dropped from the charter. You can still be an
involved parent, but not a registered leader. I was told that they got a
(fairly major) break from their insurance carrier if they could demonstrate
that all leaders were trained, ie, had a clear idea of policy and procedure
and theoretically at least this would decrease risk of injury.
I personally think this would be a great thing. Of course, the council has to
follow up and be sure that training is given regularly and often! (Also a
