As for me, I am torn. Prior to last month, I had never been to
a dining hall camp. I am (as expected) a big believer in the
patrol method, and can definitely see where that element is lost
with the dining hall. I also missed some of the campsite
comradery as the troop spent considerable less time as an
individual unit in our own campsite.
At the same time, I have first hand experience with conflicts
between KP and program, especially since the advent of the 'new
scout patrol'. In days gone by when younger scouts filtered in
with established patrols, it was not as much of an issue.
Another element in favor of dining halls in my view would be the
further differentiation between summer camping and troop
camping. And for a troop like ours that is out at least once a
month, I don't think that we have any shortage of patrol method
