I am going to chime in for mess hall dining. The troop I grew up in and then
scoutmastered never went to summer camp. We always did our own thing. I
finally attended a scout summer camp in 1995 and then again in 1996. I like
the freedom that mess hall dining gives to the lads as well as the adults.
Some camps do a better job than others with meals but the concept of a
weeklong week-end camp doesn't appeal to me.
I also attended the 1964 Jamboree as a scout with patrol cooking. Let us
just say that meal preparation was uneven and kitchen cleanliness not up to
what I considered acceptable. I finally had the adult leadership closely
supervise our patrol to avoid GI problems.
