Our council put out the same warning several years ago. I think all
councils are warning units to not use somebody else's tax exempt number,
probably because it is not legal to do so. I can see the potential
problem. A council has taken the time and money to apply for the tax
exempt number, then everybody and their dog wants access to it so they
can save a few pennies here and there to buy anything they want. I can
just see some guy going into a car dealership and buying a $30,000 car
and claiming it's for his Boy Scout Troop and here's my tax exempt
number. It simply prevents abuse of the system. Abuse or misuse of a tax
exempt number is punishable by law here in Colorado.
Also, you need to get a state and local tax exempt number here in
Colorado, so that's three numbers, three forms and several hundred
dollars in application fees to save maybe $20 a year in sales tax.
