This was in response to a post from a scouter who was having a hard time
deciding if a certain scout could be passed off on scout spirit for Eagle
Rank. I too thought that there were some real issues, and discussed them
in a private post. Some of the issues raised seemed to me to be issues
that were not relevant, but I understand the difficult decision.
With no intended disservice to Wesley and other who offered their thoughts
on the issue, I wonder what they mean by there references to "the good of
scouting at large". It seems to me that each decision should be made on an
individual basis. Are we afraid that if we give Eagle to a marginal case,
all of the other Eagles in the country will be tainted?
One of the issued raised in this case was the fact that the boy had failed
a grade. To me this is a "so what?" issue. Maybe the system passed this
boy along way to long. If he had been held back earlier would he have
changed his attitude towards school? It is hard to be a good student when
you are so far behind the rest of the class, and do not belong on the level
they force upon you. That may not be the case. I do not know.
But each scout should be a separate case. For the good of scouting, each
boy needs to be looked at without the "comparison factor". There are a
good many boys who finish scouts as Life Scouts and that is a pretty good
accomplishment. Maybe the scout in question needs to realize this. But
lets not worry about a marginal scout slipping through to Eagle and
tainting the program. IMHO it really won't alter our program or the
accomplishments of the boys in our troops that do wear the Eagle badge.
