When my father (a very tolerant man in these matters) refused to allow me
to wear a hat that I'd worn almost every day for 2 years into his house, I
threw it in a bucket with cold water and Woolite for a few days. Rubbed up
the hat a bit (especially the inside of the band), dumped the (dirty!)
water out and put clean water and soap in. Left it in a couple more days.
Scrubbed it a bit again (with a terry cloth rag), rinsed it under running
cold water thoroughly, and let it dry. It was squeaky clean.
I did this all with cold water and no agitation because I have a size 7 3/4
head and the hat band was already at its limit.
