Flag disposals/retirements make nice Eagle Scout Leadership Service
Several years ago, one of our Scouts led an effort to collect worn out flags
for retirement. He would up with 466 flags and produced quite a bit of
positive publicity for Scouting. The project wound up being mentioned
in the May-June 1997 issue of Scouting magazine.
Due to fire code restrictions, the Scout and his helpers were only able to
retire a few flags during a dignified ceremony conducted during a troop
meeting. The other flags were burned that same day at a location in the
country approved by the fire marshall.
Currently, we have another Eagle candidate conducting a similar project.
So far, his project has been publicized by over twenty newspapers, radio
and t.v. stations.
