scouts-l Mail Archive for July of 2000: Re: flag disposal

Without wanting to start the discussion all over again;
I recently came across the following that I found interesting. In the 37th
(1944) printing of the Handbook for Boys (BSA) in the section entitled What To
Do With Worn-Out Flags the following quotation:
"Old or worn-out Flags should not be used either for banners or for any
secondary purpose. When a Flag is in such condition that it is no longer a
fitting emblem for display, it should not be cast aside nor used in any way
that might be viewed as disrespectful to the National Colors, but should be
destroyed as a whole, privately, preferably by burning or some other method
lacking in any suggestion of irreverence or disrespect due the emblem
representing our country."
From "Flag Circular" issued by the War Department, April 14, 1923
The part I found particularly interesting was the reference to destroying the
flag ". . . as a whole, privately . . ." especially with the recent discussion
over whether or not to remove the field, or otherwise dismantle the flag at
Flag Retirement Ceremonies.
No judgment or opinion, just something to pass along.
